21 Day Fix: Day #3: Backsliding

21 Day Fix: Day 3

I believe that I will start measuring days based on how badly my thighs hurt. Ha! But seriously today is better, but Pilates day had a lot of leg work too, so not much better. Today is Cardio day..yay....(not)!
But carry on we must, I must.

Before we get into the food for the day I did want to talk to you a minute about backsliding!
We have all done it with something that we have tried to do or not do. Backsliding happens.
Let me paint a little picture for you.
In May I took part in a Mud Run. It was wicked fun. I left there with mud in (literally) every orifice of my body; I was bruised, scraped, bleeding, sore, wet, tired, and I smelled like farm mud. (For those of you who may not understand 'farm mud'..well, they keep animals in the fields, you get my drift.) I faced a lot of challenges that day. I climbed over bales of hay, corrugated pipe, downed trees, I army crawled through mud pits, I was sucked down by mud bogs, I climbed over cars!
There were some little hills made completely of mud that you had to climb up and then you could slide down the other side. Some of them were really hard to climb up. You couldn't get a foot hold, you would lose your footing and you would slide back down.

That's what eating healthier can be like. That's what making ANY type of significant change in your life can be like. It's like climbing up a slippery slope. No matter how badly you want to get up and over you may lose your footing, you may slide back down. The key is what you do...
You can either slide down and stay down. Admit defeat. Decide that you were never meant to go over this hill, that you can't. You aren't good enough or strong enough and you just can't.
OR
You can TRY AGAIN. You can get back in the mud. You can carve out NEW footholds, you can try a different path to get up and over. You can keep moving forward. You can NOT give up!

Whether you are trying to stop eating crap food or stop smoking or stop drinking or stop looking at porn YOU MAY BACKSLIDE. It can and often WILL happen. That is just a fact of life. We are not perfect individuals by any means. We will make mistakes we will have hard days.
Maybe your backslide will be intentional. You go and vacation and you KNOW that you eat waaay too much, but hey, it's vacation, right? You go home to visit Mom and Granny and you HAVE to eat all the deliciously deep fried things that they cook.
But maybe the backslide isn't intentional. Maybe it's emotional. I can be an emotional eater. It's a huge issue. Maybe you got a bad grade in school or you are arguing with your significant other, maybe you have lost someone close to you or there are other family problems and so you turn to food for comfort.
You DO NOT have to allow these backslides to undo your decision to have a healthier life or to undo all the good that you have done up until that point. You didn't get unhealthy overnight and you will NOT get healthy overnight. It is a process that you must go through. It's a battle that you will have to fight everyday.
I have had times in my own journey that I have gone back to my old "easy" eating habits. I have told myself I didn't have time to exercise, I was too busy to eat right. I allowed my priorities to become skewed and I lost sight of where I wanted to be.
This can happen in all of life. In our spiritual lives (if you have one), in our personal lives and in our quest for a healthier being.

My challenge, my plea to you today is to not say that the journey is too hard. Don't let the mud win. Try again. Try again a million times if you have to. Don't give up. Is it hard? Hell yes it's hard. It is HARD to break bad habits. It is HARD to change your lifestyle from something that you have always done to something new. It is HARD to decide that you have to MAKE time to invest in yourself. The saying is true, 'if it wasn't hard everyone would do it.'
Take your backslide in stride. Don't let it get you down. See it for what it is, a moment of bad decisions, or weakness, a slip.....and then try again. And again. And again. You can't let a day or a week or a month of decisions contrary to those that you have decided to live by be what makes you stop living the life that you strive for.

FOOD

BREAKFAST
Raspberry Mocha Chip Shakeology Frappaccino

RECIPE
1 scoop Shakeology (Chocolate)
1 cp (8oz) brewed coffee, cooled
4oz Almond/Coconut Milk blend (or milk of your choice)
1/2 a purple container of frozen raspberries
2tsp chocolate chips
4-5 ice cubes

Mix all ingredients in blender until smooth

In retrospect, I wish that I would have nixed the raspberries. It was still good, but too raspberry-y to me! Started off my day with Shake-o today because it is FUNDAY FRIDAY with the kids I watch and so I knew that I would be away from home some today..also because I knew I had to start my day with some coffee and I cannot drink coffee with just one packet of Splenda or something. (LOL). I can definitely tell a difference from when I have this first thing in the morning or for lunch or something. Maybe it did have something to do with the coffee, but it seems like when I have the shake of the morning I don't feel as tired or icky of the AM (I am NOT a morning person!).
1 RED; 1/2 YELLOW; 1/2 PURPLE; 2 TEASPOONS

MID-MORNING SNACK
For my mid-morning snack I had my go to. Honestly, I know that you will see this A LOT and that I have talked on and on about how you don't have to have the same things all the time. I choose this because it is my favorite. I LOVE IT! It is quick and easy and effortless and delicious and healthy...so, yes, I eat it a lot.

RECIPE
Fage 0% Greek Yogurt (plain)
blueberries (Cascadia Farms - Organic)
peaches (Laura Lynn)
raspberries (Cascadia Farms, Organic-left over from the AM)
 granola (Udi's GF Cranberry)

1 RED; 1/2 YELLOW; 1.5 PURPLE

LUNCH
I swear these veggies are the thorn in my side. I like vegetables, really, I do. But this has me down for 6 of these a day. SIX!! That is like a TON of veggies. Ugh! Anyway, lunch today was vegariffic if I do say so myself.

RECIPE
Broccoli slaw (mix from the bag salad section) with Balsamic vinaigrette dressing (Boathouse Farms, GF)
Vegenaise (you guessed it, Vegan Mayo substitute, GF)
 Ham (Hormel Naturals/GF)
 tortilla (Rudi's GF)
tomato & leaf lettuce

Simple and easy as me and the fellas were about to head out bowling (and they were eating Taco Bell - jeally), but if I can resist the Cinnabon bites and trying that new Quesarito, I will be FINE! BAHAHA.

1 RED; 2 GREEN; 1 YELLOW; 1 ORANGE; 2 TEASPOONS

MID-AFTERNOON SNACK
Have I said how I'm sick of veggies?? I am. I had this filled with broccoli/cauliflower/carrots first then filled with the broccoli slaw.
2 eggs
1/2 a large banana and 1/2 a container Mango
1 RED; 2 GREEN; 1.5 PURPLE

DINNER
Dinner. The meal in the day that you are supposed to find comfort. a lot of times I save up for dinner so I won't get hungry again later on in the night and be tempted to snack. Tonight I had done just that and I took advantage with some Italian. It was quite delicious AND you got to eat A LOT! It was GF (except for the cheese because for whatever reason I didn't get the usually GF cheese I get this time)

RECIPE
Gluten Free pasta (I used Barilla because it was on sale)
Spinach
Plain Tomato Sauce
Ground Turkey
(please note my SCORE on the turkey! Marked down to $1.99 a PACK! I got like 5)
Italian Blend Cheese
Tomatoes

Preheat oven to 350.
Put pasta on to boil.
I really love Mrs. Dash seasonings because they are salt free. You certainly don't ever need an abundance of salt, but this is especially true if you are eating healthier. Some salt is good a lot is not. This is a Garlic and Herb blend. I sprinkled this on the meat.

I browned up my ground turkey along with my seasoning and then did my measuring. I separated the REDS that I get, stored the rest of the meat and then returned my meat to the pan. I added to that the chopped spinach (Here you can add tomatoes too if you choose/have them available.)

Cook the meat and spinach mixture until the spinach is wilted down.

Once pasta is cooked to your liking, measure out your servings and add to the meat and spinach in the skillet. Add tomato sauce. (Really wishing I had remembered that tomato sauce counted as a fruit and not a vegetable...I would NOT have eaten that mango!)
Anyway, add sauce and combine.

Place combined mixture in 3 cup Pyrex baking dish, sprinkle with cheese.
Place baking dish in 350 degree oven for 10-15 minutes or until cheese is melted.

And WAH-LA!
Once the cheese is melted you are ready to spring this from the oven and enjoy!

Of course your servings may vary. You may notice that I cooked everything separately so that I could MEASURE my servings with my containers. This was really a lot of food. I mean a 3 cup baking dish isn't bird food at all!
2 RED; 2 YELLOW; 1 GREEN; 1/2 PURPLE; 1 BLUE
(I hate you tomato sauce...why do you have so be sugary and considered a fruit???)

The Workout
Cardio day. My favorite! (Said NO ONE EVER). Why does it have to be cardio day? Whhhhyyyyy??? But, it is and so I have spend the whole day wondering if I will be able to do this or if I will fall over dead.
Oh, sure, I can jog a 5k, I can hike 10 miles...but THIS, this is CARDIO.
I am convinced at this point that I will not make it past this alive. There is simply no way for this to happen.
This workout has the one word that strikes fear in the hearts and minds of every person exercising everywhere, you guessed it...BURPEES! I really don't know why they call them burpees, because they don't make me want to burp, they should be called pukees because they do make me want to puke.
Seriously though I can say honestly that I had that moment at the end when sweat was rolling off the tip of my nose onto the floor, I was blowing it out of my mouth, it was gross, like really gross. But it was also awesome.
I had to use the modifiers a few times with this one. Let me tell you how I work this. I will do it like she shows starting out and do that as long as I can and then move to the modification if I have to. Now if you are really new to exercise you may not be able to do any of it the way that she does, that is okay. You may have to do the modifications all the time and that is okay too. You may do the modifications and not be able to do the whole minute for that exercise, and that is okay too! YOU do what YOU can do. This doesn't mean that you always say, well I can't do any more, I have done 30 seconds and that is enough...yada, yada, yada. You have to push yourself PAST your comfort zone.
One thing that Autumn says in the video is that if you cheat, if you quit you are only cheating and quitting yourself.
There is a difference in quitting and doing all that you can. Quitting is when you see that the clock says 30 seconds left and you think 30 is enough, doing all you can is physically not being able to do another thing. If when you start you can only do 30 seconds, okay. Follow the modifications and do all you can. You don't have to be perfect in your workouts! You don't have to follow along exactly from the start as long as when you finish you can say that you did the best that YOU can that is all that matters. Some exercise is better than none. You ARE making progress. We are ALL a work in progress.
I went slow some....but I didn't quit. I gave it all I could and that is something. In fact, giving something your all is everything!
This is legit my before and after the cardio workout. Please note the glistening on the top of my head on the right. Sheesh. It was intense. I DREADED today, but once I did it, I was glad that I did!

Maybe you are dreading making a change to your life. Maybe you are dreading having to cut back on your favorite foods, maybe you are dreading exercise, maybe you dread having to go to your favorite place to eat and not get what you always get. That's ok.
Making changes in your life is like doing cardio. You dread it. When you do it you hate every.single.second. But once you are done you feel SOO much better! Once you do it you are glad.
Look you WILL have people who tell you that buying better food or eating better food will not help you. That spending extra money on cage free eggs or organic this or that will not help you. But look, if they have never tried it they will never know how much better you feel when you cut crap food and chemicals out of your diet. You will feel the difference I can promise you that.
Give me 21 days. 21 days to show you that you can feel better and eat better and move more and that you CAN succeed. There are people just like you out there who have no freaking idea where to start, who have no one to turn to for questions, who have no support system, but they want a change...let ME be your support system, your someone to turn to. If I can do this, if I can make the decision at 318 pounds, if I can find it in me to skip the cheesecake; to get off my fat ass and MOVE some, if I can do it YOU CAN DO IT!
